昔者齐景公之时，有三勇士，名曰田开疆、古冶子、公孙接。三人皆力能扛鼎，志气高远，常在景公面前夸耀自己的勇猛与忠诚。然而，晏婴（字平仲）认为这三人恃功自傲，对国家并不忠心，恐日后生变，遂向景公进言：“此三人者，不可留也。”

景公问其故，晏婴答曰：“此三人者，虽有力气，但无礼义。若不除之，恐有后患。”于是，晏婴设计，以二桃赐给三人，令他们各自述功，功大者食桃。

三人争功，各言己功。田开疆先说：“我曾击退敌军，保全国家，此乃第一功。”说完便欲取桃。古冶子不服，说道：“我曾冒死救主公于危难之中，此功岂可不及田开疆？”公孙接也不甘示弱，声称自己也有大功，不应落后。

三人争论不休，互相指责对方虚伪。最后，三人皆羞愧自责，认为自己不应为一桃而争斗，最终三人拔剑自刎，以谢君恩。

景公闻之大惊，叹曰：“寡人不明，险被奸臣所害！”从此以后，景公更加信任晏婴，并对他委以重任。

In the time of Duke Jing of Qi, there were three brave warriors named Tian Kaichuang, Gu Yezi, and Gongsun Jie. Each of them was strong enough to lift a tripod and had lofty ambitions. They often boasted about their bravery and loyalty in front of Duke Jing. However, Yan Ying (also known as Pingzhong) thought these three were arrogant and disloyal to the state, fearing they might cause trouble in the future. Therefore, he advised Duke Jing: "These three men should not be kept."

Duke Jing asked why, and Yan Ying replied: "Although these three are physically strong, they lack propriety and righteousness. If we do not deal with them, there will be trouble later on." Thus, Yan Ying devised a plan to present two peaches to the three warriors, ordering each to recount his merits, with the one who has the greatest merit being allowed to eat the peach.

The three began to argue over their achievements. Tian Kaichuang said first: "I once repelled enemy troops and saved the country, this is the first merit." After saying this, he intended to take the peach. Gu Yezi disagreed, saying: "I once risked my life to save Your Highness from danger, how can my merit be less than Tian Kaichuang's?" Gongsun Jie also claimed that he too had great merits and should not fall behind.

The three argued incessantly, accusing each other of hypocrisy. In the end, all three felt ashamed and guilty for fighting over a peach, eventually committing suicide by sword, apologizing to the duke.

Upon hearing this, Duke Jing was greatly shocked and sighed: "I did not understand clearly before, nearly falling victim to a villainous minister!" From then on, Duke Jing trusted Yan Ying even more and entrusted him with important responsibilities.
